The complete car interior cleaning routine
Weekly (10 minutes)
- Shake out or vacuum the floor mats.
- Wipe the dashboard, door panels and centre console with a dry microfiber cloth.
- Empty the ashtrays, cupholders and door pockets.
- Clean the inside of the windows with a glass cleaner and a clean cloth.
Monthly (30 minutes)
- Vacuum the seats, carpets and boot thoroughly, including under the seats.
- Wash the floor mats with water and soap, then dry them completely before putting them back.
- Clean the steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake with a gentle cleaner.
- Apply a dashboard conditioner if the plastic looks faded.
What not to do
- Do not spray cleaner directly onto electronics or the infotainment screen.
- Do not use harsh household chemicals on leather or vinyl — they can crack it.
- Do not refit wet mats. Moisture trapped under a mat causes odour and rust.
The right tools
| Item | Use |
|---|---|
| Microfiber cloths | Dusting and glass — never use the same cloth for both |
| Soft-bristle brush | Vents, stitching and carpet edges |
| Glass cleaner | Interior windows |
| Mild upholstery cleaner | Stains on seats and carpets |
A clean cabin is mostly maintenance, not effort. Ten minutes a week beats a full detail once a year.
